Your pet and the holidays

The holidays hold special meaning for the Bell household. We adopted our greyhound Laura on Dec. 27, 2008 (the day before my birthday) from Maine Greyhound Placement Service (MGPS) in Augusta, Maine.

We did a lot of research before adopting her, but none of it was as beneficial as talking with staff members from MGPS. I think we talked Mary’s ear off (1 hour+ conversations) before actually going out to meet the hounds.

One of the ways I give back is by volunteering with MGPS as a photographer and graphic designer. I edit the newsletter and the annual calendar. However, there are lots of other volunteers who do far more than I and with the move into the new kennel, they’ve been busy bees transferring the hounds from the old kennel to the new kennel and getting it ready for December 3.

Why December 3? Because that’s when the first Holidays with the Hounds event will be happening! From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. the adoption center will be open, the Tally Ho Shop (a shop for greyhound goodies), and myriad other vendors will be offering holiday shopping fun to the people of Maine. And I’ll be there too doing Holiday Hound Portraits to help benefit MGPS.

Speaking of getting ready for the kennel, volunteers are needed to help with the final parts of the transition this weekend. For more information, contact Sharon Eugley via Facebook or the staff at MGPS at (207) 626-2893.
